The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just very simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman cooks made use of many spices, including some familiar names such as basil, fennel and dill. During the next few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications were in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased free time and disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
