The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were two interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of those days. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Leek Or Courgette Risotto recipe.
