The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Moving on, there were two books which date from the 14th Century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of that period. During the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
