The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of books from the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the rich and powerful. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were starting to become popular due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
