The History of Recipes

Written recipes as a concept can be found back into ancient history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated.

During the time of the Romans a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef describes how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, mint and dill.

Over the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, testing, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
