The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into history, in truth as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise like bay, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an increase in recipe publications, some of which are now in private cookery archives. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Lemon Crackers recipe.
