The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existance of recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later, we have two interesting cookery books dating from the fourteenth century - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are not about the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food eaten by the wealthy. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
