The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as a concept can be found far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the nobility of that period.

Over the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

When we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are in great demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more money.

The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
