The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes back into the far past, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of Roman times used many different aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created a surge in recipe manuscripts, some of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
