The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. Much later, in Roman times a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Roman chefs used many spices, including some familiar names such as basil, mint and dill. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of cookery books which were published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and coriander. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
