The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, in fact as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius informs us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like bay, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices created a torrent in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
