The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he describes how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, rue and dill.

During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

By the advent of the 1900s, cooking books were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading.
