The History of Recipes

We can read the history of written recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also recounts how the cooks of Roman times used many spices, including some that we all recognise for example bay, fennel and parsley.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are now in academic collections.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes of the day.

The arrival of TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
