The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we have a couple of cookery books from the 1300s - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the wealthy. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books were highly popular due to better eduction, increased leisure time and being a little richer. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
