The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. In practice though, sadly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, something we still use today. He also tells us how the ancient chefs used a wide range of herbs and spices, including some familiar names for example bay, rue and asafoetida. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
