The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient records were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient Romans used a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like basil, mint and parsley. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the East, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes prompted a torrent in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
