The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existence of recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`.

As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient Romans made use of many different herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, rue and asafoetida.

Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers.

The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
