The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated.

Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the Roman cooks used a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, rue and parsley.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an increase in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are kept safe in private libraries.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site.
