The History of Recipes

Historians have traced the existence of recipes back into the far past, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including many that are still in use today for example bay, rue and asafoetida.

During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers.

By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, more spare time and a general increase in wealth.

The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
