The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we have a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of those days. During the following few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe tried to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
