The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into the far past, certainly as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, these, early recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. He also recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, fennel and dill.

Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new foods and tastes was responsible for a surge in recipe books, most of which still exist in private collections.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site.
