The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were a couple of books from the 1300s : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the nobility of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted an explosion in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in academic collections. The TV revolution gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
