The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the early Romans used a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the East, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an outbreak in recipe publications, most of which are kept safe in private collections. By the advent of the 20th century, cookbooks are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having more spare time and being a little richer. |
