The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, rue and asafoetida. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich strove to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are greatly in demand mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and a general increase in wealth. |
