The History of Recipes

We can follow the history of written recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful.

As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius recounts how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, fennel and dill.

Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab countries, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in academic collections.

During the next few hundred years, the rich families of the West strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site.
