The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into the far past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we have two interesting recipe books which date from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the upper classes of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like parsley and basil. These new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private collections. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
