The History of Recipes

Food historians have found proof that recipes existed far back into the far past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the time.

Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to a torrent in books on cookery, the majority of which are now in private libraries.

Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day.

The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site.
