The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these early records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Closer to modern times, there were a couple of cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of that time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications are highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
