The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
As we move on, there are a couple of recipe books from the 1300s - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created an eruption in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Onions Au Gratin recipe.
