The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of books dating from the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of the time. Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of TV brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
