The History of Recipes

We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`.

As we move on, there were two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the indian curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of those days.

During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income.

The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
