The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the Roman chefs made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, mint and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe tried to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are increasing in popularity as a result of increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
