The History of Recipes
Food historians have found proof that recipes existed way back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for a surge in cookery books, most of which are kept safe in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
