The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as thyme, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, most of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this 24 Hour Vegetable Salad recipe.
