The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient records were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are two books which date from the 14th Century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are not about the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in publications on food, the majority of which are now in private collections. The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
