The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the early Romans made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices prompted a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which are now in private collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications were highly popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, increased leisure time and disposable income. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
