The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius tells us how the Romans made use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example thyme, rue and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
