The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` back into history, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius tells us how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of many spices, including a few you will know such as thyme, fennel and parsley. Later, there are two interesting books which were published in the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes caused an eruption in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are in high demand, mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
