The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As we move on, we have a couple of recipe books which date from the fourteenth century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the nobility of the period. For the next few years, the families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
