The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel blissful. Moving on, there are a couple of interesting books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the rich and powerful of that period. During the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe publications are in great demand, due to increased literacy, leisure time and being a little richer. |
