The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of books published in the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the rich and powerful of the period. Over the following few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. When we get to the 1900s, cooking books were greatly in demand as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
