The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and dill. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on food, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, more spare time and disposable income. The arrival of TV brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
