The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, in truth as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later, we have two interesting cookery books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books were increasing in popularity due to better eduction, increased leisure time and disposable income. |
