The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existance of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have two interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are not about the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
