The History of Recipes

We can read the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, in fact as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, rue and dill.

For the next few years, the powerful families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group.

The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site.
