The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked way back into the far past, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in recipe publications, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Acqua Di Miele Alla Luganese (Honey Water) recipe.
