The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, these, early records were just very basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we find two interesting cookery books which date from the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created an outbreak in cookery books, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
