The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, sadly, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman chefs made use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know such as basil, mint and dill. Over the next few centuries, the upper classes tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
