The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius recounts how the ancient chefs used many different spices, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of books published in the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices created a surge in recipe manuscripts, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
