The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into the distant past, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient chefs used a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in recipe manuscripts, many of which are now in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
