The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these old records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius tells us how the early Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and parsley. Over the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
