The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes back into distant history, at least as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example bay, mint and asafoetida. Later, we have some recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices created a surge in manuscripts on cooking, some of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
