The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. He also informs us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as basil, rue and asafoetida. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
