The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into history, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. He also informs us how the ancient cooks used many different spices, including a few you will know for example basil, mint and dill. Later, there were two interesting recipe books published in the 1300s - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cooking, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted an eruption in recipe manuscripts, most of which are now in private libraries. For the decades that followed, the upper-class families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the twentieth century, cook books are in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
