The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into the distant past, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, early cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the holy lands, such as basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes caused an explosion in publications on food, many of which are now in private libraries. Over the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Almonds recipe.
