The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into ancient history, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient records were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were two recipe books dating from the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the wealthy. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the holy land, such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private libraries. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve up the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cookery books were in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more free time and having more money to spend. The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
